creek council tree

In the 1830s, a tribe called the Creek Indians were forced to leave their homeland and make it to land across the Mississippi River, where the government had granted them land in what was known as Indian Territory. In 1836, they found an oak tree on top of a hill that overlooked the Arkansas River. They decided this would be their council ground.

Near the tree, they lit a ceremonial fire using coals they’d carried with them. This gathering place became the location for many tribal ceremonies, games and feasts for about 60 years.

The tree remains in the heart of Tulsa today, at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and 18th Street. But at several times it was in danger; the land was privately owned for many years, and in 1960 there was a risk that it would be torn down to create a parking lot. Instead, the Creek Nation and others bought the area and donated it to the city of Tulsa. The city turned the area into the Creek Nation Council Oak Park, which has 1.86 acres.
